___________________________________________________________ 28th EPS Conference on Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics, 18-22 June 2001, Funchal, Portugal ----------------------------------------------------------- *************** 1. Introduction *************** This CD-ROM contains the contributed papers to the 28th EPS Conference on Controlled Fusion and Plasma Physics. The collection of papers can be accessed in two independent ways; either in HTML using a frames capable web browser (like Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer) or in PDF using Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 4 or greater). In the following, we refer to these two ways as the "HTML version" and "PDF version", respectively. The HTML version features multiple indices (sessions, topics and authors) with HTML links to each paper in PDF format. This version contains a full cross-reference table of authors/papers. Navigation in this view is very similar to browsing a website. In the PDF version, in addition to the usual navigation across papers and indices, papers are also searchable by means of a search engine included in the CD-ROM. To make navigation easier, buttons were added to the top of each page. These buttons link to the main navigation window (main), to the indices (sessions, topics and authors) and to the following and previous paper (session and topic order). To avoid overloading the papers with buttons, we chose to provide an additional, static, main navigation window, containing links to the table of contents, indices, search engine and to the help pages. The format of the PDF version is similar to that of the booklet, and therefore we suggest using this version for printing. *************** 2. Requirements *************** 1) A computer with CD-ROM 2) Adobe Acrobat Reader 4.0 or higher (available from http://www.adobe.com) 3) Optionally a frames capable web browser (like Netscape or Microsoft Internet Explorer) **************** 3. Configuration **************** The CD-ROM is best used if the integration between the Acrobat Reader and the web browser is configured in such a way that the following holds: 1) When a pdf page has a link to an html document, clicking the link opens a web browser window, which displays the corresponding html document (This is the only sensible behaviour). 2) When an html document has a link to a pdf page, clicking the link does the following: a) In the HTML version, the pdf document is openend within the web browser window, via the acrobat plugin b) In the PDF version, an independent Acrobat Reader window opens and displays the corresponding pdf page 3) When a pdf document has a link to another pdf document, and that link is activated, the Acrobat Reader may display the linked document on a new (sub-) window, or instead, replace the referring document by the linked one. The user may specify what behaviour is preferred: the user's choice will generally be honoured, except if the (referring) document itself requests the opposite Please refer to the file pdfs/help.pdf for instructions on how to configure the Acrobat Reader to achieve this behaviour ****************** 4. Getting Started ****************** Open the file readme.pdf using the Acrobat Reader and follow the directions to select the version (HTML/PDF) you prefer to access the papers. After that, follow the links to the table of contents or to the index if you wish to find a contribution by paper or by author. For browsing papers, we suggest using the sessions index. If necessary, the papers can also be accessed directly in the directory pdfs of the CD-ROM; the file names correspond to the session numbers. C. Silva, J. Pires and R. Nóbrega December 2001
